Critical Incident Declared Across NHS Services in Cornwall and Plymouth Amid Rising Pressure on Hospitals

NHS services across Cornwall declared system critical incident on 3rd January 2025. NHS bosses made the decision following sustained pressure experienced by Cornwall’s main hospital and emergency department.

This was followed by University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust declaring a critical incident on 7th January due to significant and rising demand for hospital care.

This can be particularly worrying for those who may need to access services, especially when in an emergency.

Residents are being asked to help reduce pressure on hospital emergency departments by choosing alternative services including minor injury units, GP services, local pharmacies and NHS 111 whenever possible.

Support, including one-off grants, is also available to friends and relatives of those waiting for home care to leave hospital sooner.
